The resumption of negotiations comes after an escalation of tension between the U.S. and Iran.
The arrest follows the announcement that several spies affiliated with Mossad have also been arrested recently, as well as that of two French nationals last May on charges of organising protests in Iran.
A U.S. State Department official expressed disappointment, saying that “Iran has, yet again, failed to respond positively to the EU’s initiative and … no progress was made.”
In the wake of a building collapse last week that killed 34 people and injured 37 others, incensed protesters took to the streets chanting anti-government slogans, including “death to Khamenei.”
Zaghari-Ratcliffe touched down at Brize Norton, a Royal Air Force station based in Oxfordshire, in the early hours of Thursday morning to be greeted by her family.
