Despite its birth rate sinking to a ten-year low, the population of Germany nevertheless climbed to 84.3 million people in 2022—more people than have ever lived in the country before—as net migration amounted to a record-setting 1.5 million people.
“We can’t give in to the idea of ethnic replacement: the Italians are having fewer children and we’re replacing them with someone else. That is not the way,” Francesco Lollobrigida, Italy’s Agriculture Minister said.
Demography is normally a matter handled through the domestic policy of member states, but the European Union intends to influence national policies in this area.
Ahead of state elections set to be held this weekend, the FPÖ state boss spoke directly to Austrians, telling them that counteracting population exchange is entirely in their hands.
Official figures from the Irish government have revealed that female non-Irish national residents—despite composing slightly more than one-twentieth of the total population—gave birth to well over one-fifth of the children born in 2021.
With the exception of Hungary and Poland, migration continues to be the primary driving force of population growth in most EU member states.
