The referendum came as Austria, with its nine million-strong population, saw a tripling of the number of asylum applications filed between 2021 and 2022.
Holding the vote on the same day as the general election would ensure sufficient turnout to give Warsaw something tangible to fight back against the migration edict.

Warsaw is putting its foot down. “We will not pay for the mistakes of European multicultural policy. We know how to distinguish solidarity from coercion and dangerous ideological projects,” Polish PM Mateusz Morawiecki said.
At the end of the day’s strike, Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne announced that she had heard the “questions” and “doubts” raised by the reform but wanted to continue the debate in the national assembly.
Sturgeon, who has been First Minister since 2014, has made an independent Scotland part of her platform for most of her political career. She believes that with its independence, Scotland would be a stronger and more competitive country.
