Teachers report living with students threatening to “faire une Paty”—in reference to the beheading of history teacher Samuel Paty—on a daily basis.
The young girl whose statements led to the murder has admitted she lied and was not in class on the day she said Paty showed pictures of Mohammed to students.
Among those facing trial are students who provided information about the whereabouts of the murdered teacher and an Islamist preacher who allegedly communicated with the terrorist online.
“I have always been firmly convinced that this attack could have been prevented. Today, concrete elements confirm this conviction. Mistakes were made both on the side of the National Education and the Ministry of the Interior, without which Samuel Paty could have been saved,” the family’s lawyer said.
The prosecutor’s office in Digne-les-Bains, a French commune situated in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region of southeastern France, has opened an official investigation into an incident last Thursday which saw a group of individuals use rocks to smash the glass display of the memorial.
