Tsipras said it was time to pass the torch to a new generation of Syriza leaders Thursday, as poor electoral results and an unexpected return of the ultra-Right bodes poorly for the Greek socialists.
The ultra-Right National Party is regarded as the heir to the banned Golden Dawn party and will be blocked from advancing to May elections. The decision is likely to help moderate nationalists.
With the wiretapping scandal dealt with for now, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis can turn his attention to securing Greece’s national defense interests.
