A major new appointment was announced online recently, when a combat veteran and former Homeland Security federal agent “accepted a new position as a Management & Program Analyst within the Strategic Planning and Analysis Directorate for the U.S. Border Patrol.”

Vincent “Rocco” Vargas enlisted in the U.S. Army and served three combat deployments with 2nd Battalion of the elite 75th Ranger Regiment. He joined the Department of Homeland Security in 2009, and later worked as Special Operations Group medic. Vargas, 43, will now

focus on the front-facing image, messaging, and strategic communication, ensuring that the Border Patrol’s mission, challenges, and successes are accurately represented. With my background in border security, journalism, and strategic analysis, I am committed to strengthening public understanding and shaping compelling narratives highlighting the critical work to secure our borders.

The author of Borderline: Defending the Home Front (2023) and a successful film and TV actor, Vargas has been critical of the continuing crisis at the U.S. border. His return to public service shows both a growing resolve to fix this problem and the type of professional the authorities need for the task in hand.
