The Budapest Chief Prosecutor’s Office has upheld a legal complaint filed by influencer István Szakács, officially revoking his status as a criminal suspect. Prosecutors concluded there was insufficient evidence to reasonably suspect the prominent right-wing commentator of threatening to commit an act of terrorism.
The high-profile case began on July 8, 2026, when police searched Szakács’s home, seized property, and carried out a body search. Best known for his work with the pro-government Megafon platform, he was taken into custody and formally accused of threatening a terrorist act. The raid attracted widespread attention, prompting support from Fidesz politicians, while his wife said seven police officers had arrived at their home before dawn.
Szakács immediately challenged both the police operation and the criminal charge, insisting he had committed no offence. After reviewing the case files, the Chief Prosecutor’s Office found that the evidence did not meet the legal standard required to justify a reasonable suspicion that he had committed the alleged terrorism offence. However, it rejected his complaint over the raid itself, ruling that police had met the lower legal threshold of simple suspicion needed to open an investigation and authorise the search, seizure of property, and body search.
