Six migrants were killed and three injured late Thursday when a car plunged into Lake Vaya near the Black Sea city of Burgas after a high-speed chase with Bulgaria’s Border Police, authorities said.
The vehicle, a Romanian-registered Skoda, failed to stop for police near Tsarevo at around 21:20. Officers pursued the car for roughly 30 minutes as the driver repeatedly endangered traffic, at one point ramming a family vehicle.
Police deployed spike strips on a main boulevard to prevent the car from entering central Burgas. Travelling at an estimated 150–160 km/h on a wet road, the driver swerved to avoid the barrier, lost control and overturned into the lake.
Six Afghan men died at the scene, apparently crushed by the vehicle. Three survivors were taken to hospital in stable condition.
The driver, a Romanian citizen about 30 years old, survived and was arrested. Authorities said the group was heading toward Western Europe.
