That was quick: the Hungarian prime minister-elect said on Tuesday X he would do what it takes to have the country’s EU funds unlocked after talking to Ursula von der Leyen.
Péter Magyar, leader of the Tisza Party that won the April 12th elections, announced this afternoon that he had a phone call with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen about the unfreezing of the funds withheld from Hungary under Viktor Orbán’s premiership.
I had an important call with @vonderleyen, president of the European Commission. We agreed that unlocking the EU funds earmarked for the Hungarian people, but frozen due to the previous government’s corruption, is the top priority.

Magyar stated that “the new government will take key political decisions on how to unlock and invest these funds,” adding somewhat ambiguously this was “in line with the clear mandate of the Hungarian people” received on April 12th. Magyar added
The Commission will work closely with us to meet the extremely tight deadline and deliver results.
What those results are and how they will be delivered remains unclear.
