Budapest decided to leave the “politically motivated” court in May 2025, following ICC issuing an arrest warrant for Benjamin Netanyahu.

On Wednesday, May 27th, the Hungarian parliament voted to repeal the decision by the ousted conservative government to withdraw Hungary’s membership in the International Criminal Court (ICC).

The decision to exit the ICC was made after Viktor Orbán met with Benjamin Netanyahu in April 2025, during which the then Hungarian prime minister criticized the court issuing an arest warrent for the Israeli PM. The conservative Fidesz government said ICC was “politically motivated” in its action. Hungarian lawmakers approved leaving the court on May 20, 2025.

Hungary’s new prime minister, Péter Magyar, has so far sent mixed signals regarding his posture towards Israel and Netanyahu. He invited him to the anniversary celebrations of Hungary’s 1956 revolution, while also announcing he would reverse the decision to quit ICC, and suggested the Israeli premier would be arrested if he visits Hungary.
