Hungarian police announced Friday, May 29th that they would not ban next month’s Pride parade in Budapest, a reversal from the position last year—when the event was banned under conservative former prime minister Viktor Orbán.
Hungary’s new pro-Brussels government under Prime Minister Péter Magyar has regularly voiced support for Budapest Pride following its election victory in April.
Pride organisers submitted a formal notification on Wednesday regarding their intention to hold this year’s march on June 27th. The police replied in a statement:
During the notification process for the 2026 Pride parade and the subsequent in-person consultation with the organisers, no grounds for prohibiting the assembly arose.
