Public dissatisfaction with the current government continues to grow, with only around one in five Germans satisfied with Chancellor Merz’s performance.

A recent Insa poll for Bild shows that if Germans could directly elect their chancellor, 26% would choose AfD leader Alice Weidel—ahead of incumbent CDU leader Friedrich Merz (20%) and SPD’s Lars Klingbeil (12%). However, 31% of respondents said “none of them.”

The survey also found that Weidel is highly popular among AfD voters, with 92% wanting her to have more influence, in contrast to the party’s divisive and controversial figure Björn Höcke. Meanwhile, overall approval for the federal government remains low, with just 21% of respondents satisfied with its performance.
