The right-wing populist party tops polls, with its base of those certain to vote also increasing significantly.

Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) has reached a historic milestone, topping a recent Insa poll with the highest ever figure recorded by the institute. The survey shows the AfD rising by another 0.5% points to 26.5%, while the Union parties (CDU/CSU) slipped to 24.5%, losing half a percentage point.

The Institut für neue soziale Antworten (INSA) also recorded that the Social Democrats (SPD) dropped to 14.5%, leaving the governing CDU/CSU-SPD coalition with only 39% support, far below their 44.9% share in the February federal election.

Meanwhile, Die Linke (The Left) gained 0.5 points to 11.5%, narrowly surpassing the Greens, who fell to 11%. The liberal Freie Demokratische Partei (FDP) stands at 3.5%, and Sahra Wagenknecht’s BSW holds at 4%—both below the 5% threshold required to enter the Bundestag.

Analysts also note that the AfD’s base of ‘certain to vote’ voters has grown significantly. Now at 21%, it exceeds the party’s total federal election performance (20.8%). The CDU/CSU trails with 18% in this category, while the SPD lags far behind at just 9%.
