Greek police have arrested a 26-year-old Afghan national accused of killing 38-year-old Elisabeth Jane Ross in Athens and hiding the British woman’s body in a suitcase.
According to the Daily Mail, a homeless man found the suitcase in an abandoned parking lot in Athens’ Kypseli district on July 18. Ross, a committed Christian, worked helping refugees and homeless people, and likely met her killer through her work.
After the murder, the Afghan migrant used the British victim’s bank card several times, allowing police to track him down and arrest him. Athens police reported finding his fingerprints on the bag, and security camera footage also showed the Afghan killer carrying the suitcase to the parking lot. To divert attention from the British woman’s disappearance, the unnamed Afghan man sent messages from her phone to her friends and family, pretending she was alive.
In a text message sent to a Greek friend on July 15, he wrote: need some time – I’m going to a Greek island.
The Afghan man confessed to the murder; police also found a replica gun and a knife in his apartment.
