The number of Czech children who do not take part in any sports activities has drastically increased from 24.5% in 2021 to a shocking 45.1% in 2025.
The survey was carried out in April on a sample of 14,235 respondents—parents of children aged 3 and over.
The main reason why children choose not to play sports is a lack of interest—this is according to 60.2% of parents.
Other reasons cited were financial difficulties (25.3%), lack of sports facilities nearby (22.4%), and health problems (21.7%).
MP Patrik Nacher of the opposition sovereignist-patriotic ANO party pointed the finger at the centre-right Europhile government, accusing the state and public institutions of “completely failing” to deliver in this area.
According to the politician, in 2024, the costs associated with obesity in the Czech Republic alone reached 2.5% of GDP.
