According to Eurostat’s most recent data revealed on Friday, April 25th, the European Union granted protection to 437,900 asylum seekers in 2024, which is a 7% increase compared to the previous year.
Germany, France and Spain accounted for almost two-thirds of the protections granted, the EU’s statistics agency said.
Similarly to previous years, Syrians, Afghans and Venezuelans are the main beneficiaries of asylum granted within the European Union.
Following pressure from members states, Brussels is to tighten immigration rules. Proposals have been unveiled recently that would accelerate the expulsion of illegal immigrants and limit asylum options available to migrants arriving from certain countries.
