Facing widespread concern, Stocker highlighted issues affecting Vienna’s cityscape, echoing recent German calls for realism on migration and public safety.

The governing Österreichische Volkspartei (ÖVP) posted on Instagram:

Yes, we have a problem with the cityscape.

The post featured Austrian chancellor Christian Stocker, who said the issue should be addressed “with open eyes and honesty,” referring to the challenges illegal migration poses to Austria.

The Austrian center–right party’s video showed tents in public spaces, the growing number of Islamic and Arab-owned businesses, and increased police presence in Vienna. Stocker described these as a “description of reality,” adding that there was nothing discriminatory about acknowledging them.

People see it every day; it makes no sense to pretend it doesn’t exist.

The remarks echo recent comments by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who raised similar concerns about urban change linked to migration. Despite criticism from coalition partners and some CDU members, Merz has stood by his remarks—insisting that citizens deserve an honest discussion about public safety and city life.
