Greek authorities have saved more than 300 asylum seekers from dangerous Mediterranean waters over the past 48 hours.

Greek officials confirmed on Tuesday, April 14th that more than 300 migrants—primarily from Bangladesh, Egypt, Sudan, and Yemen—were saved during a two-day operation.

Nearly half were intercepted on Monday off the coast of Crete, where the coast guard found them traveling on at least three makeshift vessels. Despite strong winds in the area, search operations continued through Tuesday. A coast guard official stated that the migrants are currently being held by Cretan police and will soon be transferred to reception centers on the Greek mainland.

Crete has recently emerged as a primary gateway for asylum seekers making the perilous crossing from Tobruk in eastern Libya.
