A baby food supplier in Austria has issued a recall of a product line after warning that a potentially lethal substance may have been introduced through tampering.
The HiPP brand said it was recalling its entire range of “baby food jars sold at SPAR Austria,” stating that “it cannot be ruled out that a hazardous substance was introduced into the ‘HiPP Carrot/Potato—190 grams’ product through tampering, and consumption could be fatal.”
Customers have been urged not to consume the product and to return any affected jars to the store where they were purchased. The product can be identified by a white label with a red circle on the bottom of the jar.
Police in Austria’s eastern Burgenland region have appealed for witnesses as part of an ongoing investigation. However, they have not released further details about the suspected substance or the circumstances behind the incident.
No injuries have yet been reported.
Earlier this year, a separate incident saw major food company Danone recall more than 120 batches of infant milk formula in Austria and Germany following safety checks by Austria’s food agency AGES.
