As a no-confidence vote against her unfolded in Strasbourg, the EU Commission head delivered a lengthy speech in Rome, praising Zelensky.

“While the liberal elite rescued Ursula von der Leyen in the European Parliament, she was speaking at a conference on the reconstruction of Ukraine,” Balázs Orbán, the political director of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said on Facebook in a comment to the Commission President’s actions on Thursday. “Symbolic,” he said.

Orbán criticized the Europhile Hungarian opposition for immediately closing in behind von der Leyen and, along with her, focusing more on Ukraine than on the citizens they are supposed to represent:

The large coalition of Tisza and DK closed behind von der Leyen and pledged the following: “Today we gathered in this magnificent city to show our lasting commitment to Ukraine.”

Sharing parts of the whole speech, Orbán then highlighted the message behind von der Leyen’s remarks: “more money for war, more support for Ukrainian interests, less fight for European interests” he wrote.
