An unusual incident led to the delay of a public transit bus in Lower Bavaria, a German region deeply rooted in Catholic traditions, as reported by Junge Freiheit. A bus driver halted his fully loaded vehicle in the middle of a scheduled route to perform Islamic prayers. The unexpected stop raised questions about the boundaries of religious expression during professional duty.
The incident took place in Ergolding, a market municipality in the Landshut district, while the bus was heading toward the Landshut city center. Upon reaching a designated stop, the Muslim driver parked the vehicle, stepped outside, and walked to the back of the bus. He then unfolded his prayer rug on the ground and began praying, causing the journey to be delayed by several minutes.
Passengers on board were left startled and highly uncertain by the driver’s sudden departure, according to a report by the television channel Sat.1 Bayern. While the local municipal utility company strongly emphasized the fundamental right to freedom of religion, management explicitly stated that public transportation services must not be interrupted under any circumstances. It remains unclear whether the driver will face internal disciplinary actions or sanctions for the unauthorized delay.
