Belgium and the Netherlands are among the largest export countries.

Belgian authorities are dismantling an average of three illegal drug laboratories per month, with 19 uncovered in the first half of 2025, according to Interior Minister Bernard Quintin. This follows a total of 33 busted labs in all of 2024.

A growing concern is the sharp rise in synthetic cathinones—also known as “zombie drugs” or “bath salts”—which mimic the effects of amphetamines and are often used as substitutes for MDMA or cocaine.

Five cathinone labs have already been discovered this year. These potent designer drugs, including mephedrone and flakka, are known for their unpredictable and sometimes violent effects on users.

“Belgium and the Netherlands themselves are still among the largest export countries of synthetic drugs,” Quintin stated.

To tackle the issue, Belgium is increasing port security, especially in Antwerp, a key trafficking hub. Measures include more drones, cameras, and an expanded maritime police force.

Authorities have also launched 72 cocaine-related investigations and seized 3,600 tonnes of cocaine in the first six months of 2025 alone.

In Belgium and the Netherlands, there is a growing link between drug production and migrant gang activity.

Officials have said more than 100 of Europe’s most dangerous criminal networks operate in Belgium, with drug gangs blamed for a rise in street shootings in Brussels.
