A Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson stated on Thursday, April 16th that Georgia’s potential accession to the European Union could result in the country being added to Moscow’s list of “unfriendly countries.”
According to Maria Zakharova
Georgia will have to comply with the energy embargoes imposed on our country… Joining the EU also means that Georgia will lose its preferential trade regime with Russia and the CIS countries, which remain its primary export markets.
Zakharova further noted that Russia could “extend retaliatory economic measures” associated with the ‘unfriendly’ label—including the requirement that trade payments be settled in rubles.
While Georgia was granted EU candidate status in 2023, the government officially suspended its accession efforts in 2024.
