Authorities in Belgium have reported a sudden spike in people-smuggling activity—a significant shift from the zero incidents reported in 2025—with several crossings already documented this year along the Flanders coast.

Local police recently intercepted 15 migrants near Nieuwpoort who were prepared for a potentially dangerous voyage with inadequate safety gear. A Westkust Police spokesperson described the seizure, stating:

They were carrying an inflatable rubber boat, an outdoor motor, and jerry cans of gasoline. Of the 15 people, only four were equipped with life jackets. The findings indicate that the group of men intended to cross to the United Kingdom.

In response, the UK has allocated £1.3 million (€1.5 million) to Belgian law enforcement to bolster land, sea, and Frontex-led air patrols.

The English Channel remains one of the world’s most perilous migration routes, with approximately 41,000 arrivals recorded in 2025. While France has traditionally been the primary launchpad, a recent French clampdown—and, less likely, the UK’s “one in, one out” asylum agreement—have pushed smugglers further north.

Experts warn that this longer route from Belgium significantly increases the risk of hypothermia and collision. Retired coastguard Andy Roberts highlighted the grim reality of these departures, noting,

The majority of migrants wade out to the boats that take them, so they’re soaking wet up to their chest before they even set off.

Roberts emphasized that navigating the world’s busiest shipping lane in overcrowded boats is “extremely dangerous in every respect.”
