In the city’s Mitte district, the Green mayor decided to celebrate the Muslim fasting month with lights throughout the entire period.

For the first time, lights have been installed in Berlin’s Mitte district for the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan. This was announced by Stefanie Remlinger, the Green district mayor, to the Berliner Zeitung. It is the first time in Berlin that such lighting has been placed in public spaces.

Festive lighting is being installed at the town hall in Tiergarten – said the Green politician. Remlinger had already announced the measure last year.

“We are a diverse district, our residents come from more than 60 nations,” boasted the mayor, who said they want to act against prejudices related to Muslims.

Berlin is not the only city in Germany where lighting is installed during Ramadan: during the Islamic fasting month, the city of Frankfurt also switches on festive lighting.

A downtown route is decorated with the inscription “Happy Ramadan”, illuminated crescents, stars and lanterns.

Almost all religious community representatives were present at the switching on of the lights on Wednesday evening – writes the German newspaper.

According to Nargess Eskandari-Grünberg, also a Green mayor, the Ramadan lighting “symbolises the peaceful coexistence of the people of Frankfurt.”
