The Anglican bishop of Lincoln has been arrested on suspicion of sexual assault, police in eastern England have confirmed.
Lincolnshire Police said a 68-year-old man was detained as part of an “ongoing investigation” into an allegation that a man was sexually assaulted between 2018 and 2025. He has since been released on conditional bail while inquiries continue.
The man arrested is Stephen Conway, who has led the Diocese of Lincoln since 2023.
In a statement, the diocese said Conway had been suspended from ministry after a complaint was made to the Church of England’s National Safeguarding Team, in line with the House of Bishops’ safeguarding code of practice. The matter has been referred to the relevant statutory authorities.
No details of the complaint have been made public.
Conway previously served as Bishop of Ramsbury and Bishop of Ely. He has also been a member of the House of Lords since 2014, as one of the Church of England’s Lords Spiritual.
Police said the investigation remains ongoing.
