Prison guards took the former Brazilian president from his home into medical care, where he remains under house arrest.

The former president of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, had his house arrest disrupted when he was suddenly taken ill and escorted to hospital. He suffered severe hiccups, vomiting, and low blood pressure, according to his eldest son, Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, who stated:

I ask everyone to pray that there is nothing serious.

A few weeks earlier, Bolsonaro was also hospitalized due to complications from a stabbing he suffered during a campaign seven years ago, which required abdominal surgery. It is not yet clear if his current illness is related to that previous procedure.

The former president was sentenced to over 27 years in prison after being convicted of a coup attempt and other crimes. He was found guilty of conspiracy after the 2022 election—including making plans to assassinate several leaders.

In response, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the United States has threatened to “respond accordingly” to what he called a politically motivated “witch hunt.”
