Australian police say the father and son responsible for a deadly shooting at a Hanukkah event on Sydney’s Bondi Beach acted alone and had no links to a wider terrorist network.
In a statement, the Australian Federal Police said investigators have found no evidence that the pair were directed, trained, or supported by any external group. The investigation is continuing.
The attack took place on December 14 during a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, one of the city’s most popular waterfront areas. Fifteen people were killed, including members of the Jewish community attending the event.
Police said the older of the two attackers, Sajid Akram, was an Indian national who arrived in Australia in 1998. He was shot dead by officers at the scene. His son survived the incident and has since been charged with murder, terrorism offences, and other crimes.
Security has been tightened across Sydney ahead of New Year’s celebrations, police said.
