US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky held a short but all the more memorable meeting on Friday. As our newspaper also reported, shortly after Zelensky’s arrival the internet was flooded with images and videos which bore witness to the fact that the atmosphere of the negotiations was catastrophic. Yet even after these, many would not have thought that Trump would, in an unprecedented manner, terminate the talks and essentially send the Ukrainian president home.
At the same time, Trump published a statement confirming this on his X account, which we are publishing in unchanged form:
“Today we had a very substantive meeting in the White House. We learned a great deal that we could never have understood without a conversation conducted in such heat and under such pressure. It is astonishing what emerges under the influence of emotions, and I have concluded that President Zelensky is not ready for peace if America is involved, because he feels that our participation gives him a major advantage in the negotiations. I do not want an advantage, I want PEACE. He did not respect the United States of America in the revered Oval Office. He can come back when he is ready for peace.”
