Matteo Salvini has said recent events in Hungary are serious and set a dangerous precedent, after prosecutors seized the computer servers of Fidesz. In a post on X, the Italian Deputy Prime Minister said that if democracy is turned against the opposition, it is no longer democracy.
Salvini also criticised what he called the “deafening silence” from Brussels and from those who have spent years speaking about the rule of law. His remarks add to growing concern that even some allies of Hungary’s ruling party are beginning to express.
Salvini’s Lega is part of the Patriots group in the European Parliament, which also includes Fidesz. His comments follow similar criticism from French nationalist leader Marine Le Pen,, who spoke out earlier this week against the same authoritarian political drift.
