A group of Chagossian human rights organisations has reported UK Labour leader Keir Starmer to the International Criminal Court. It accuses him and other British officials of crimes against humanity committed during the costly so-called “Chagos surrender.”
The group says British officials allowed the forced deportation, persecution and mistreatment of Chagossians, especially those recently pushed out of Mauritius under a treaty. Many arrived in the UK with nothing and some have been left homeless as municipal authorities—including Hillingdon and Crawley—struggle to help.
To this day, Chagossians are under the cosh from the Mauritian authorities, who seek to exclude them from the Chagos islands. The group has also filed emergency complaints with United Nations bodies like CERD and CEDAW, continuing their campaign against what they describe as Britain’s mishandling of Chagossian rights.
