Georgia’s State Security Service (SSG) has detained three Chinese nationals in Tbilisi for allegedly attempting to buy two kilograms of uranium illegally. Authorities said on October 25th that the suspects intended to purchase the uranium for $400,000 and transport it to China via Russia.
One of the detainees was reportedly in Georgia illegally and had brought experts to search for nuclear material across the country. The SSG said the operation was coordinated from China. Searches were conducted at the homes of the detainees in Tbilisi and Batumi.
If convicted, the suspects could face up to 10 years in prison for illegal handling of nuclear material.
