The Danish PM reiterated that the Arctic island and Denmark were sovereign states whose sovereignty needs to be respected.

Speaking ahead of a NATO summit imeeting in Ankara, Turkey, Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen told reporters on Wednesday Greenland was “not for sale” after Donald Trump suggested again the Arctic island should be controlled by Washington rather than Copenhagen.

The PM said, referring to Denmark and Greenland,

We are sovereign states and we need everybody to respect our territorial integrity and our sovereignty.

Frederiksen stated Denmark was “ready to defend every inch of NATO including our own territory” and she expected fellow members of the alliance to honour their collective defence commitments.

We have written about why Greenland is important for the United States and Europe and the broader geopolitical context of the U.S.-Denmark dispute.
