After a decade-long leadership role, Epstein-linked allegations prompted renewed scrutiny of the erstwhile Strasbourg chief’s activities during and after his top-level career.

The Council of Europe on Wednesday, February 11 stripped former Secretary General Thorbjørn Jagland of his diplomatic immunity, as he faces an investigation into his ties with the deceased U.S. sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Norwegian politician Labour Party politician Jagland held immunity by virtue of heading the Council—Europe’s leading human rights and democracy watchdog—covering acts carried out during his tenure from 2009 to 2019.

Alain Berset, the Council’s current Secretary General said that he has already initiated an “informal internal administrative inquiry” into the allegations to “safeguard the integrity and reputation” of the 46-member organization, based in Strasbourg, France.
