Two men have been found guilty of supplying the bomb that killed Maltese investigative journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia in 2017. The verdict is a major step forward in a case that shocked the country. The men are expected to be sentenced early next week, and prosecutors are asking for life in prison.
After a six-week jury trial, Robert Agius, 41, and Jamie Vella, 42, were convicted on Thursday, June 5th. Prosecutors said they provided the military-grade explosives used in the car bomb that killed Caruana Galizia near her home.
Caruana Galizia, 53, was a well-known journalist who exposed corruption among Malta’s political and business leaders. Her murder sparked huge protests and political upheaval, eventually leading to the resignation of Prime Minister Joseph Muscat in January 2020, as public anger grew over attempts to protect powerful figures from investigation.
Three other men—George and Alfred Degiorgio and Vince Muscat—have already been convicted and are in prison for carrying out the murder. Businessman Yorgen Fenech, who prosecutors say planned the killing, is still awaiting trial.
