Donald Trump’s aim was to end the war quickly, move closer to Russia and later confront China together with Moscow, therefore regarding the Europeans as a dispensable obstacle.

The coup-like attempt, however, failed because Ukraine resisted, and Germany, France and the United Kingdom quickly united Europe. This significantly altered the peace plan and made it unacceptable to Moscow.

According to the author, this could be a turning point: Europe has learned that with unified and swift action it is capable of increasing its own strategic weight and, in the long term, may even become a more independent and stronger actor vis-à-vis the United States and Russia.
