The Dutch parliament voted in favor of sending a delegation of cabinet members to Hungary in June for the Budapest Pride parade, which has been banned by the government and could lead to fines being imposed on those who take part in the march.
As a clear and intentional provocation, left-wing parties of the lower house of the Dutch parliament all voted in favor of the initiative, supporting the attack on sovereign decisions made by another EU member state.
Liberal party Volt’s MP Marieke Koekkoek sent a message for politicians wishing to take part in the march: “With this, you are saying: this our Europe. A pride will always take place because these are our European values.” Several MPs have already signaled their intention to take part in the march.
Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s reason for the Pride ban was to protect children from seeing obscene events that are common in such parades. While the conservative world celebrated this pro-child decision, the global left has repeatedly attacked it and tried to interfere in the domestic politics of the country. The preparations for the Pride parade have continued in Hungary despite the ban. The government has not yet given any approvals for the event.
