China’s export boom has widened trade surpluses with Europe, raising pressure on EU leaders.

The European Union is preparing to strengthen its trade defence tools in response to growing economic imbalances with China, according to a report. Ahead of a special meeting of EU commissioners, officials are considering how to better protect European industries from the impact of China’s export-driven model.

China’s rapidly expanding exports have created significant trade surpluses with major European economies, increasing pressure on EU leaders to act. Industry chief Stéphane Séjourné indicated that Brussels is ready to intensify the use of tariffs and import quotas, particularly in strategic sectors such as chemicals, metals, and clean technology.

“Our objective is not to break with China but to have a real rebalancing and real measures that allow us to do it,” Séjourné said.
