Beijing on Monday slammed an EU plan aimed at bolstering the bloc’s industries against fierce competition from China, vowing retaliation if the measures are enacted.
In March, the EU unveiled new “Made in Europe” rules for companies seeking access to public funds in strategic sectors–including automotive, green technology, and steel. These rules oblige firms to meet minimum thresholds for the use of EU-made parts.
China’s Ministry of Commerce stated on Monday that it had submitted formal comments to the European Commission on Friday, expressing “serious concerns” regarding the policy, which it labeled “systemic discrimination.”
If the EU … presses ahead with the legislation, and thereby harms the interests of Chinese companies, China will have no choice but to take countermeasures to firmly safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of its enterprises.
