Spokesman Jan Op Gen Oorth signaled that the regional war will likely trigger a surge in terrorism, organized crime, and sophisticated cyberattacks.
A central concern for the police body is the potential for “destabilising activities” conducted by the Iranian-sponsored “Axis of Resistance.” This network of Shi’ite—or at least pro-Iranian—paramilitary groups is expected to pivot toward the EU to engage in intimidation, terror financing, and the exploitation of digital infrastructure via artificial intelligence (AI)-driven fraud.
Europol claims that the internal security landscape of the continent has reached a critical juncture, with Op Gen Oorth stating that
the level of terrorist threat and violent extremism in EU territory is considered high.
This heightened risk is attributed both to coordinated proxy actions and the unpredictability of self-initiated “lone actors.” Furthermore, the digital front remains a primary vector for unrest; Europol warns that
the rapid spread of polarising content on the internet can accelerate short-term radicalisation processes among diaspora communities within the EU and other individuals.
