Citing months of the British establishment campaigning against him, Reform UK leader Nigel Farage will step down as the MP for Clacton-on-Sea. In a twist, however, he vows to fight in the subsequent parliamentary by-election aiming to retake the Essex seat.
UPDATED: A by-election in Clacton has now been formally triggered, following Farage’s resignation as an MP.
Reform chief whip Lee Anderson moved the writ in the Commons on Thursday, July 9th, meaning there will be a likely by-election date of Thursday, August 13, which has yet to be confirmed.
Prior to the announcement, Farage was under pressure from parliamentary authorities and press to account for two financial gifts from cryptocurrency investors made before he decided to run for parliament in 2024. Some of the funds were to be allocated to security: Farage lives under continual threat of violence, including the credible menace of jailed Afghan ‘influencer’ Fayaz Khan, alias ‘madapasa’ or ‘Mada Pasa.’
Farage claims that the last straw came when the Sunday Times published a photograph of his daughter’s home while purporting to cover his finances. He presents his decision, like the ensuing by-election which Reform has offered to pay the £230,000 (€269,150) cost of—instead of the Treasury—as an electoral contest of Clacton voters versus the UK political establishment.
