Satellite images show that the first road bridge linking North Korea and Russia is nearing completion, marking a further step in the deepening cooperation between the two countries.
The new crossing spans the Tumen River, only a few hundred metres from the existing rail link known as the “Friendship Bridge”. Recent imagery shows the kilometre-long structure alongside newly built access roads, a border checkpoint, parking areas, and supporting infrastructure, suggesting preparations for regular cross-border traffic.

Construction on the Khasan-Tumangang Bridge began after an agreement reached during Russian president Vladimir Putin’s visit to Pyongyang in June 2024, when he met North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. The project has been closely monitored via satellite, showing rapid progress over the past year.
According to Russia’s transport ministry, the bridge is designed to handle up to 300 vehicles and 2,850 people daily.
