The Ukrainian Ministry of foreign affairs reported Russian drone and missile strikes on several Ukrainian cities on Friday night, including Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk, Zaporizhzhia, Chernihiv, Sumy, Kharkiv, Kherson, and Odessa. According to President Volodymyr Zelensky, the attacks targeted residential buildings and civilian infrastructure, killing at least five people and injuring many others.
Sunday’s assault followed a large-scale strike on a Ukrainian railway station in Shostka on Saturday. Oleksandr Pertsovsky, head of Ukraine’s national railway company Ukrzaliznytsia, stated the attack aimed at cutting off communication with frontline communities. “This is one of the most brutal Russian tactics—the so-called ‘double blow’, when the second strike hits rescue workers and evacuees,” Deputy Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said in a Telegram post.
Moscow has intensified airstrikes on Ukraine’s railway network, carrying out attacks almost daily for the past two months. As in previous years, since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Moscow has also stepped up strikes on the country’s power grid in the months leading up to winter.
