Bulgaria’s former President, Rumen Radev, announced on Monday, March 2nd that he has registered a three-party political alliance called Progressive Bulgaria to contest the parliamentary election on April 19th. This will be the country’s eighth election in seven years.
Radev, who stepped down from his largely ceremonial role in January, remains one of the most popular politicians in Bulgaria. In a Facebook post, he wrote:
Progressive Bulgaria is the answer to the expectations of Bulgarians seeking to dismantle the oligarchic corruption model. To succeed, we will fight for a decisive victory, and that depends on the voice of all Bulgarians.
The new alliance brings together three left-leaning parties: the Our People Movement, the Social Democratic Party, and members of the Socialdemocrats political movement.
