Unveiled at the Eurosatory defence exhibition, the new tank combines German and French technology in an effort to bridge a growing capability gap.

A new battle tank has been unveiled for the French Army as France and Germany look for a stopgap solution while work on their next-generation tank remains years behind schedule.

The vehicle was presented by the Franco-German defence company KNDS as a temporary replacement for France’s ageing Leclerc tanks. It is intended to fill the gap until the Main Ground Combat System (MGCS), a joint French-German project launched in 2017, is ready. The MGCS is supposed to replace both France’s Leclerc tanks and Germany’s Leopard 2 fleet, but is not expected to enter service until the 2040s.

The unveiling took place at the Eurosatory defence exhibition near Paris. KNDS described the tank as an “interim capability”, combining a German-built chassis with a French-made gun.

The project is the latest attempt by France and Germany to cooperate on major military equipment programmes despite repeated delays and disagreements. One of the most prominent examples is the Future Combat Air System (FCAS), a planned next-generation fighter aircraft programme that has faced years of disputes between the two countries and their defence industries.
