The ruling marks Sarkozy’s second final conviction, further complicating the former president’s ongoing legal battles—while diminishing his slim prospects for a political comeback.

France’s highest court on Wednesday, November 26th, upheld the conviction of former president Nicolas Sarkozy for illegal campaign financing, confirming the sentence handed down by an appeals court last year.

The Court of Cassation validated a six-month term to be served under electronic monitoring, along with an additional six months suspended, ruling that Sarkozy had exceeded legal spending limits during his 2012 re-election bid.

The decision makes the conviction final, adding to a separate corruption case previously upheld against the former head of state. Even with his new side hustle as a prison diarist, Sarkozy looks unlikely to persuade the legal system of his innocence.
