Adrien Guihal—the man who claimed responsibility for the 2016 Nice attack on behalf of the terrorist group Islamic State (IS, aka ISIS)–—is set to stand trial in Iraq with 46 other French nationals.
The terror suspects were recently moved from Syria to Iraq. Speaking on condition of anonymity, someone close to the case described how
Adrien Guihal, known as Abu Osama al-Faransi, is still under investigation … brought to Iraq two months ago with another 46 French nationals that will be tried here.
Guihal, a veteran member of France’s jihadist circles, made headlines after being identified as the person who claimed the July 2016 Nice attack, which left 86 dead. He is considered one of the most dangerous members of the French faction within the IS, whose self-proclaimed ‘caliphate’ once controlled large areas of Iraq and Syria before collapsing in 2019.
Guihal, who joined IS in 2015, was captured in Raqqa, Syria, in May 2018. He spent several years in Kurdish prisons before being transferred to Iraq in July with 46 other French nationals, all under investigation for alleged IS crimes in the country.
“Interrogations are ongoing with the 47 French nationals,” the Iraqi source said, alleging that “it has been proven” they are all members of IS.
France—repeatedly targeted by jihadist attackers over the last ten years—has brought back 179 children and 60 women since 2019, mostly from detention camps in Syria.
