Parliament will reform Georgian immigration control following a package of measures adopted on Thursday, June 26th.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs won unanimous support for its proposals, which will also affect both the criminal code and the code of administrative offences. Moving forward, the new law permits the expulsion of foreigners from Georgia and could ban their re-entry for specified time periods.
Deportation will include safeguards, meaning deportees won’t be sent to places where they face serious risk of torture. Asylum applications can now be reviewed at the border, isolating potential threats to national security.
Claiming that the legislation was developed with the influence of the European Parliament and European Council in mind, the ministry presented the amendments as being designed to
improve the fight against illegal migration and refine regulations related to the granting of asylum.
