German taxpayers are funding hotel accommodation for almost 2,500 Afghans in Pakistan who are waiting to be relocated to Germany.

The exact amount that the German government is providing to the organisations responsible for accommodating the Afghan nationals has not been revealed by the interior ministry when asked by news website Nius.de. It instead referred the enquiry to the foreign office.

The new centrist government is continuing to bring in more Afghan migrants, despite the coalition’s promise to shut down these resettlement programs, and despite the upsurge in violent crimes and terror attacks being committed by Afghan asylum seekers in Germany.

In April, a charter flight with 138 Afghans on board landed in Leipzig.

Berlin has been periodically flying in Afghans deemed at risk of persecution and those who worked for German institutions, since the Taliban returned to power in 2021.

But it has since been revealed that on the flight to Leipzig many Afghans had no clear ties to Germany, leaving many to question how they were chosen.

Shortly before departure, numerous people had been denied boarding because federal police officers had expressed “security concerns.” Other cases had also come to light in which people had concealed their identity.

The German government spent €49 million on flights and accommodation for several thousand Afghans from Pakistan between 2022 and November 2024.
