Warsaw eyes up the threat from Russia as it tries to extend its network of military alliances.

Polish and German defence ministers announced the signing of a bilateral defence agreement on Wednesday, June 17th.

During a joint press conference with Germany’s Boris Pistorius, Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz of Poland declared:

The defence agreement … opens up new areas for cooperation. In the field of cybersecurity, joint responsibility, joint command in the Baltic, new technologies.

Warsaw has already signed defence treaties with Britain and France and aims to work more closely with Italy. Its orientation towards military alliances reflects growing concern about the territorial ambitions of its Russian neighbour.
